They settled on the median traffic from the four weeks before the tournament as a per-minute reference point, then expressed changes as a log-base-2 ratio against that baseline. That scale makes a doubling of traffic and a halving of traffic symmetric around zero, so a positive score means a spike and a negative score means a lull, regardless of which direction the swing goes.
The single biggest driver of how much a match moved the needle wasn't the stakes of the game but the clock. Matches that kicked off between midnight and 8 a.m. local time produced the sharpest deviations, since that's exactly when ordinary browsing activity is at its lowest and fans staying up or waking early to watch push traffic well above its baseline, in some cases more than doubling it. Beyond kickoff timing, Cloudflare's data also picked up more granular in-game rhythms. Grouping countries by the shape of their match-day traffic curves revealed three distinct patterns: a large majority where usage rose during halftime and hydration breaks as viewers reached for their phones, a smaller cluster including Algeria, Tunisia, Jordan, Egypt, and DR Congo where traffic actually fell during those same pauses, and Iran's matches, which stood apart entirely because the country's pre-tournament baseline was still depressed from an earlier internet shutdown. Breaking down the second cluster's traffic by content type pointed to streaming as the explanation: in Algeria, the surge during play and the dip at halftime tracked closely with multimedia request volume, suggesting many viewers were watching over an internet stream that got closed the moment the half ended.
Even the shorter, three-minute hydration breaks were enough to register a lift in most countries, showing that it doesn't take a fifteen-minute halftime intermission for viewers to glance back at their phones. And at the scale of the final itself, played between Argentina and Spain, HTTP byte volume tracked the match closely enough that kickoff, halftime, hydration breaks, and the final whistle were all visible as distinct inflection points in the data, alongside a smaller but detectable bump around the bronze medal match between England and France.
Taken together, the numbers describe something more textured than "the World Cup was popular." They show a tournament whose rhythms, kickoff hour, halftime length, even a three-minute pause for water, left fingerprints on how hundreds of millions of people used the internet in real time.
