Cloudflare has achieved FedRAMP High authorization, a significant milestone that allows the company to offer its full suite of security and performance services to U.S. federal agencies. The certification, sponsored by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), marks a major step in the company's public sector strategy.
The FedRAMP Standard
FedRAMP, the Federal Risk and Authorization Management Program, is the U.S. government's standardized approach to security assessment for cloud products. Achieving "High" status is the most rigorous level, indicating the system can handle the nation's most sensitive unclassified data.
This designation is a substantial leap from the "Moderate" certification Cloudflare previously held. Moderate is for systems where a compromise could have a serious adverse effect. High is for data related to law enforcement, emergency services, and national security. A compromise here could be catastrophic.
A Single Network Approach
Cloudflare's approach is unique. Instead of building an isolated government cloud, they applied software-defined controls to their existing global network. This ensures that traffic is processed and inspected exclusively within U.S. data centers.
This architectural decision means federal agencies receive the same cutting-edge technologies as enterprise customers. They get the latest DDoS protection, application performance features, and developer tools as soon as they are released.
Path to DoD IL4
The company also announced it is using the new FedRAMP High systems as the foundation for pursuing U.S. Department of Defense Impact Level 4 authorization. IL4 is the department's baseline for systems handling controlled, unclassified information.
Implications
The certification challenges the previous standard of building isolated technology islands. Federal agencies often had to choose between modern features and stringent compliance. Cloudflare's model suggests it is possible to have both.
Cloudflare hopes to help agencies modernize their infrastructure, protect against sophisticated cyber threats, and deliver fast digital services. The company is working with agencies across the government, including the Department of State and the Department of Commerce.
