The Scientific Toolkit

The first component provides Genesis Mission awardees with in-kind access to several of DeepMind's most advanced scientific models:

The second component, Gemini for Government, provides secure AI seats and tokens for one year to operations, research, and management teams across the national laboratory network. This is designed to support the full breadth of lab work, from bench research to the administration of specialized user facilities that serve the broader scientific community.

The emphasis on security is notable. Government and national lab data require handling standards that exceed typical commercial cloud offerings. By providing a "single secure foundation," Google is positioning its platform as infrastructure the DOE mission can depend on for sensitive research workflows.

Already in Action

The practical impact is already visible. At Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, senior scientist Dr. Henry Kvinge is using AlphaEvolve to explore mathematical systems too complex for manual exploration, automating the search for connections that would normally take years to discover. At the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), Dr. Steven R. Spurgeon's team has deployed Gemini in microscopy instruments, cutting calibration time from over 90 minutes to about 13 minutes and reducing manual focusing steps from 50 to two. NREL reports this has enabled genuinely autonomous workflows that observe, reason, and decide in real time.

The Genesis Mission represents one of the most ambitious attempts to integrate AI into the federal scientific enterprise.
