A New Multimodal Entry Point
For a quarter century, the Google search box remained a static white rectangle designed for brief keyword queries. That paradigm is ending. Google is rolling out a dynamic, AI-driven interface that accepts text, images, PDFs, videos, and open Chrome tabs directly at the primary entry point. The box now expands to accommodate longer, conversational queries, encouraging users to articulate complex questions in granular detail rather than compressing their curiosity into fragmented strings.
Unifying AI Mode and Traditional Search
The most significant architectural change is the unification of AI Overviews and AI Mode into a single, seamless flow. Users can type a question, receive an AI-generated summary alongside traditional results, and continue into a back-and-forth conversation without navigating to a separate interface. Liz Reid, Google's vice president and head of Search, noted that this eliminates the friction of choosing between a traditional results page and an AI-forward experience.
The Infrastructure Behind the Shift
This redesigned interface runs on Gemini 3.5 Flash, Google's newest AI model optimized for both quality and throughput. The system also introduces generative UI capabilities, allowing search to dynamically build custom widgets and interactive visualizations in real time. With AI Mode queries doubling every quarter and AI Overviews reaching over 2.5 billion monthly users, this redesign signals a fundamental shift toward conversational, multimodal search.
