Skyroot Aerospace's Vikram-1 rocket achieved orbit on its very first launch attempt Saturday, a feat that eluded SpaceX, Rocket Lab, and most other private space companies on their debuts. The 72-foot vehicle lifted off from Sriharikota Island at 06:35 UTC after a 30-minute delay to resolve a last-minute technical issue, then climbed to an altitude of roughly 280 miles and successfully deployed its satellite payloads.
The mission makes Skyroot the first private Indian company to reach orbit, and places India alongside the United States, China, and Russia as nations with commercially developed orbital launch capability. Prime Minister Narendra Modi called Skyroot CEO Pawan Kumar Chandana personally to congratulate the team, calling the flight a "defining moment in India's space journey."
How the Flight Unfolded
Three solid-fueled stages fired in sequence to push the rocket out of the atmosphere, followed by ignition of a small liquid-fueled fourth stage that accelerated the vehicle to approximately 17,000 mph. Onboard cameras transmitted live views of each phase. The only anomaly came during separation of the third and fourth stages, when the spent third stage motor lingered closer than expected during a brief coasting period. The fourth stage compensated and placed the rocket into a 450-kilometer orbit at 60 degrees inclination, confirmed by US military tracking data.
Skyroot had set a deliberately modest bar for this flight. Its stated primary objective was simply to lift off, clear the launch tower, and collect ascent data. Pawan Goenka, chairman of IN-SPACe, the government body promoting India's commercial space sector, noted the gap between expectations and results: "The mission objective was only to lift off and clear the tower. That was only about 100 meters, but what we went to was 450 kilometers."
Why First-Attempt Success Is Rare
New orbital rockets fail more often than they succeed on debut. SpaceX needed four attempts before Falcon 1 reached orbit in 2008. Rocket Lab's Electron failed its first flight in 2017. Blue Origin's New Glenn succeeded on its inaugural launch in 2025, but its engineers had years of suborbital experience with New Shepard to draw on. Chandana himself admitted he had not expected orbit on the first try. "Statistically, the first launch from a private company almost always fails," he said before the flight. Afterward, he described the experience as "nothing short of a suspense movie."
The Rocket and the Company Behind It
Vikram-1 is constructed from lightweight carbon composite materials and is named for Vikram Sarabhai, the physicist regarded as the father of India's space program. The rocket can carry up to 770 pounds (350 kg) to low-Earth orbit, making it slightly larger than Rocket Lab's Electron. Its upper stage uses a 3D-printed engine, a manufacturing choice that reduces part count and production time.
Skyroot was founded in 2018 by Chandana and fellow ISRO alumnus Naga Bharath Daka. The company has raised approximately 1.1 billion. Its workforce exceeds 1,000 employees, with an average age of 28. The company is headquartered in Hyderabad.
India's Push to Privatize Space
The launch arrives at a critical inflection point for Indian space policy. The government, through IN-SPACe, has been actively dismantling the monopoly that ISRO long held over launch services. ISRO provided Skyroot with access to solid rocket motor casting facilities and allowed the company to use an active launch pad at Sriharikota, a level of institutional support that would have been unthinkable a decade ago.
Modi has publicly set a target of 50 launches per year by 2030, up from roughly five annually today. That ambition requires private companies to handle a significant share of the launch manifest. India's government rockets, including the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle and the larger LVM3, already attract commercial customers from the US and Europe. Adding a domestic private launcher creates the possibility of a vertically integrated space economy where satellites, launch vehicles, and ground services all originate within the country.
What Comes Next
Skyroot's roadmap includes the Vikram-1U, which will add strap-on boosters for heavier payloads, and the Vikram-2, featuring a cryogenic upper stage capable of lifting 900 kg to orbit. Chandana has also spoken of longer-term plans for fully reusable liquid-fueled rockets operating at a "daily cadence" from multiple countries. Those ambitions will require substantially more capital than the company has raised so far.
A second Vikram-1 flight could occur before the end of the year. For now, the company has proven it can build a rocket, launch it, and reach orbit. In an industry where most startups never get that far, that alone is enough to make Skyroot the most credible private launch provider outside the US and China.
