Skyroot Aerospace's Vikram-1 rocket punched through the atmosphere and into orbit on Saturday, becoming the first privately developed Indian launch vehicle to reach space on its maiden flight. The 22-meter solid-fueled rocket lifted off from the Satish Dhawan Space Center on Sriharikota Island at 06:35 UTC after a half-hour delay to clear a last-minute technical issue, then climbed to an altitude of roughly 450 kilometers and an inclination of 60 degrees. US military tracking data independently confirmed the successful orbital insertion.
The launch exceeded even the company's own modest expectations. Skyroot had told reporters beforehand that the primary goal was simply to clear the launch tower and gather ascent data. Instead, the rocket's three solid stages and a liquid-fueled fourth stage with a 3D-printed engine performed nearly flawlessly, deploying two CubeSats and carrying additional payloads that remained attached to the upper stage.
A Rare First-Flight Success in an Unforgiving Industry
First orbital launches from private companies usually end in failure. SpaceX needed four attempts before Falcon 1 reached orbit in 2008. Rocket Lab's Electron failed on its debut in 2017. Blue Origin's New Glenn succeeded on its first try in 2025, but its engineers had already flown dozens of suborbital New Shepard missions.
Skyroot had no such cushion. Its only prior flight was the suborbital Vikram-S in November 2022, which peaked at 90 kilometers. Going from that to a fully orbital vehicle in under three years, and nailing it on the first attempt, is the kind of feat that turns heads in the global launch industry.
"On the first attempt, reaching orbit, I never thought it was possible," said Pawan Kumar Chandana, Skyroot's cofounder and CEO. "This launch was nothing short of a suspense movie."
How a Young Startup Pulled It Off
Chandana and fellow ISRO alumnus Naga Bharath Daka founded Skyroot in 2018 in Hyderabad, choosing solid-fueled motors for the Vikram family because they offered the shortest development timeline and lowest per-launch cost. The company now employs more than 1,000 people with an average age of 28, and has raised approximately 1.1 billion.
The Vikram-1 itself is a compact launcher: 72 feet tall, capable of hauling up to 350 kilograms to low-Earth orbit, slightly larger than Rocket Lab's Electron. It is built from lightweight carbon composites and painted blue and white, named after Vikram Sarabhai, the physicist widely regarded as the father of India's space program.
ISRO provided critical support, offering access to solid rocket motor casting and test facilities at Sriharikota, plus a launch pad. That government-industry partnership model, formalized through IN-SPACe in 2020, appears to be paying dividends.
India's Push to Multiply Its Launch Cadence
The timing is not accidental. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has publicly set a target of 50 launches per year by 2030, up from roughly five today. India became the fourth nation to land on the Moon in 2023 and is developing a crewed orbital mission, but its commercial launch sector has lagged behind the US and China.
Modi called Chandana personally after the launch to congratulate the team.
"This is a defining moment in India's space journey," the Prime Minister said. "The growing participation of our private sector is opening new frontiers and accelerating innovation."
The global small satellite launch market is crowded and capital-hungry, but Skyroot's first-flight success gives it a credibility advantage that money alone cannot buy. European and American launch providers have struggled with reliability and schedule delays in recent years, creating an opening for new entrants that can demonstrate consistent performance.
What Comes Next for Skyroot
Skyroot's roadmap extends well beyond Vikram-1. The Vikram-1U will add strap-on solid boosters for heavier payloads, while the Vikram-2 will introduce a cryogenic upper stage capable of lifting 900 kilograms to orbit. Chandana has also spoken openly about eventually building larger, fully reusable liquid-fueled rockets with a "daily cadence" from multiple launch sites worldwide.
Those ambitions will require significantly more capital. But for now, Skyroot has done something no Indian space startup, and few startups anywhere, have managed: it built a rocket, launched it, and reached orbit on the very first try.
