Stripe Reportedly to Acquire OpenRouter for Over $7 Billion

Stripe reportedly agrees to acquire AI gateway startup OpenRouter for more than $7 billion, marking one of the largest AI acquisitions to date.

Stripe is reportedly acquiring AI gateway startup OpenRouter for over $7 billion, according to Bloomberg. OpenRouter provides access to more than 400 AI models through a single API, and the deal would be one of the largest AI acquisitions to date.

Stripe is reportedly in advanced talks to acquire OpenRouter, an AI gateway startup that provides customers with a single access point to more than 400 AI models, for a price exceeding $7 billion, according to Bloomberg. The Wall Street Journal previously reported that Stripe and OpenRouter were in acquisition discussions.[reference:19]

OpenRouter's AI Gateway Model

OpenRouter helps customers select different AI models to perform different tasks, depending on their specific needs and budget. The company announced in May that it had raised funding at a reported $1.3 billion valuation, with investors including Sequoia, Andreessen Horowitz, Menlo Ventures, and Alphabet's Capital G.[reference:20]

At the time, OpenRouter CEO Alex Atallah described the company as the equivalent of Stripe for AI, because it provides customers with a single access point for different systems and prevents lock-in.[reference:21] The startup also claimed to have 8 million global users and to provide access to more than 400 models.[reference:22]

A Blockbuster AI Deal

A Stripe spokesperson told TechCrunch that the company does not comment on rumors or speculation.[reference:23] If the deal closes at the reported price, it would be one of the largest acquisitions in the AI industry, reflecting the soaring demand for AI infrastructure and the strategic importance of model aggregation platforms.

For Stripe, acquiring OpenRouter would provide a powerful entry point into the rapidly growing AI ecosystem, enabling the payments giant to offer AI model selection and routing as a service to its vast customer base. The deal would also give Stripe a direct stake in the AI value chain at a time when enterprises are increasingly looking for ways to integrate multiple AI models into their workflows without being locked into a single provider.
