Wreckreation 2 Announced Despite Studio Closure, Just Nine Months After Original

Former Criterion head Fiona Sperry is developing Wreckreation 2 with a new studio, months after the original's studio closed. The sequel aims for a more urban, Burnout-like experience.

Wreckreation 2 has been announced by a new studio, When Tides Turn, led by former Criterion head Fiona Sperry. The sequel arrives just months after the original's studio closed and aims to correct its predecessor's flaws by focusing on a more urban, compact map and tighter gameplay, shifting closer to the spirit of Burnout Paradise.

In a surprising turn of events, a sequel to the 2025 racing game Wreckreation has been announced, despite the lukewarm reception of the original and the closure of its developer, Three Fields Entertainment. Fiona Sperry, former head of Burnout developer Criterion Games, is leading the project through a new studio called When Tides Turn.

Wreckreation was released in 2025 to mixed reviews, with critics pointing to its unpredictable handling, dull open-world map, and samey event structure. The studio, Three Fields Entertainment, effectively shut down in the immediate aftermath of the release, with no further support from publisher THQ Nordic. The founders, including Sperry and Alex Ward, had previously created other Burnout-adjacent titles like Dangerous Golf, Danger Zone, and Dangerous Driving.

A New Vision for the Sequel

According to early reports, Wreckreation 2 is taking a different approach from its predecessor. The game is described as more compact, trading the original's enormous but one-note rural map for a more dense, urban environment. This shift suggests the sequel may return even closer to the spirit of Burnout Paradise, a game the original heavily referenced in its modes and presentation. The game has reportedly been in development for about three months.

Wreckreation 2 is currently in development for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S, though no precise release date has been set. The news comes as a surprise to many, given the quick turnaround and the challenges faced by the original project. However, Sperry's commitment to the arcade racing genre remains clear.

"We're excited to build on the core concepts of the original while delivering a more focused and thrilling experience," a representative for When Tides Turn stated. The sequel aims to address the criticisms of the first game by leaning into the fast-paced, high-stakes arcade action that defined Sperry's earlier career.
